Declining Rotation Curve and Brown Dwarf MACHOs

چکیده

If the Galactic rotation speed at the Solar circle is ∼ 200 km s or smaller, which is supported by several recent studies, the rotation curve of the Galaxy could be declining in the outermost region. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of such declining rotation curve on the estimate of the MACHO mass and the fractional contribution of the MACHOs to the Galactic dark halo. Using Hernquist and Plummer halo models instead of the standard halo model, we find that the MACHO mass could be significantly smaller than that for the standard halo case. In particular, there exists a certain set of halo parameters for which the MACHO mass is 0.1M⊙ or less and at the same time the MACHO contribution to the total mass of the halo is almost 100 %. This result indicates that a halo which consists solely of brown dwarfs can be consistent with both of the observed microlensing properties and the constraints from the rotation curve, provided the outer rotation curve is indeed declining. Mirror Matter MACHOs

We propose that the massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) observed in the recent microlensing experiments with an apparent best fit mass of about 0.5M⊙ are objects made out of “mirror” baryonic matter rather than familiar baryons. Such a possibility arises naturally within the framework of mirror matter models proposed recently to accomodate the sterile neutrinos that seem necessary to solve al...

Photometric Variability of the T2.5 Brown Dwarf Simp J013656.5+093347; Evidence for Evolving Weather Patterns

We report the discovery of a photometric variability in the bright T2.5 brown dwarf SIMP J013656.57+093347.3. Continuous J-band photometry has been obtained for several hours on four different nights. The light curves show a periodic modulation with a period of ∼2.4 hours, a peak-to-peak amplitude of ∼ 50 mmag and significant night-to-night evolution. We suggest that the light curve modulation ...

Dark Baryons and Rotation Curves

The best measured rotation curve for any galaxy is that of the dwarf spiral DDO 154, which extends out to about 20 disk scale lengths. It provides an ideal laboratory for testing the universal density profile prediction from high resolution numerical simulations of hierarchical clustering in cold dark matter-dominated cosmological models. We find that the observed rotation curve cannot be fit e...

Periodic photometric variability of the brown dwarf Kelu - 1

We have detected a strong periodicity of 1.80±0.05 hours in photometric observations of the brown dwarf Kelu-1. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the variation is ∼1.1% (11.9±0.8 mmag) in a 41nm wide filter centred on 857nm and including the dust/temperature sensitive TiO & CrH bands. We have identified two plausible causes of variability: surface features rotating into-and out-of-view and so modul...

Understanding the shape and diversity of dwarf galaxy rotation curves in ΛCDM

The shape and diversity of dwarf galaxy rotation curves is at apparent odds with dark matter halos in a Λ Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. We use mock data from isolated dwarf galaxy simulations to show that this owes to three main effects. Firstly, stellar feedback heats dark matter, leading to a ‘coreNFW’ dark matter density profile with a slowly rising rotation curve. Secondly, if close to...
